Sexual Orientation

Sexual orientation refers to the enduring pattern of emotional, romantic and/or sexual attraction toward individuals of a particular gender or multiple genders. It is diverse and exists along a spectrum rather than fixed categories.

Varieties of Sexual Orientation -

1. Heterosexual

  • Attraction to individuals of the opposite sex.
  • Most common orientation globally, often emphasized in traditional socio-cultural contexts.

2. Homosexual

  • Attraction to individuals of the same sex.
  • Includes gay (men attracted to men) and lesbian (women attracted to women).

3. Bisexual

  • Attraction to both men and women.
  • Emotional and sexual preference may vary in intensity across time or context.

4. Pansexual

  • Attraction regardless of gender identity or biological sex.
  • Focuses on emotional connection rather than gender categories.

5. Asexual

  • Little or no sexual attraction to others.
  • May still experience romantic or emotional attraction (sometimes called *aromantic* if absent).

6. Queer/Fluid

  • Non-conforming or flexible orientation that does not fit neatly into fixed categories.
  • Emphasizes individuality and evolving attraction patterns.

7. Other Variants

  • Demisexual: Attraction only after forming strong emotional bonds.
  • Polysexual: Attraction to multiple genders, but not necessarily all.
  • Omnisexual: Similar to pansexual, but acknowledges gender as part of attraction.
