Major Types of Motivation -

1. Intrinsic Motivation

  • Example: Learning a language because you love exploring cultures.

2. Extrinsic Motivation

  • Comes from external rewards or pressures.
  • Driven by money, grades, recognition or fear of punishment.
  • Example: Studying hard to win a scholarship.

Other Classifications -

1. Positive vs. Negative Motivation

  • Positive: Encourages action through rewards (praise, success, incentives).
  • Negative: Encourages action by avoiding undesirable outcomes (fear of failure, punishment).

2. Primary vs. Secondary Motivation

  • Primary (biological): Basic needs like hunger, thirst, sleep, safety.
  • Secondary (learned): Social approval, achievement, status, power.

3. Achievement Motivation

  • Desire to excel, accomplish goals and outperform others.
  • Example: Athletes striving to break records.

4. Power Motivation

  • Drive to influence, control, or lead others.
  • Example: Leaders motivated to shape policies or organizations.

5. Affiliation Motivation

  • Desire to build relationships, belong, and be accepted socially.
  • Example: Joining clubs or groups to feel connected.
