Coping Mechanism
A coping mechanism is a conscious or unconscious response used by an individual to handle stress, anxiety, or internal and external conflicts effectively.
Types of Coping Mechanisms -
1. Problem-Focused Coping
- Directly tackles the source of stress.
- Example: Making a plan, seeking information, or changing behavior to solve a problem.
2. Emotion-Focused Coping
- Manages emotional reactions rather than the stressor itself.
- Example: Meditation, journaling, talking to a friend, or reframing thoughts.
3. Avoidance Coping
- Evades or denies the stressor.
- Example: Ignoring financial problems, procrastination, or distraction through entertainment.
4. Adaptive Coping
- Healthy strategies that promote resilience and long-term well-being.
- Example: Exercise, mindfulness, positive self-talk, seeking social support.
5. Maladaptive Coping
- Harmful strategies that may worsen stress over time.
- Example: Substance abuse, aggression, overeating, social withdrawal.
6. Cognitive Coping
- Using mental strategies to reinterpret or reframe the situation.
- Example: Positive thinking, acceptance, or finding meaning in adversity.
7. Behavioral Coping
- Taking physical or practical actions to reduce stress.
- Example: Time management, relaxation techniques, or engaging in hobbies.
