Differentiate The Five Theories Of Emotions
Differentiate the five theories of emotions from each other -
1. James–Lange Theory
- Main Idea: Emotion due to bodily changes
- Order of Events: Stimulus → Arousal → Emotion
- Role of Body: Primary (very important)
- Role of Cognition: Not important
- Speed: Slower (due to body changes)
- Example: “I am afraid because my heart beats fast”
2.Cannon–Bard Theory
- Main Idea: Emotion & arousal occur together
- Order of Events: Stimulus → Arousal + Emotion
- Role of Body: Important but independent
- Role of Cognition: Not necessary
- Speed: Fast
- Example: Fear & heart rate occur together
3. Schachter–Singer Theory
- Main Idea: Emotion = arousal + cognitive label
- Order of Events: Stimulus → Arousal → Label → Emotion
- Role of Body: Important (with cognition)
- Role of Cognition: Essential (labeling)
- Speed: Moderate
- Example: Heart beats + “danger” → fear
4. Cognitive Mediational Theory
- Main Idea: Emotion depends on appraisal
- Order of Events: Stimulus → Appraisal → Emotion → Arousal
- Role of Body: Secondary
- Role of Cognition: Primary (comes first)
- Speed: Depends on thinking
- Example: Thinking “danger” → fear
5. Facial Feedback Theory
- Main Idea: Facial expression influences emotion
- Order of Events: Facial expression → Emotion
- Role of Body: Important (via face)
- Role of Cognition: Minimal
- Speed: Fast
- Example: Smiling → feeling happy
