Differentiate The Five Theories Of Emotions

Differentiate the five theories of emotions from each other -

1. James–Lange Theory

  • Main Idea: Emotion due to bodily changes
  • Order of Events: Stimulus → Arousal → Emotion
  • Role of Body: Primary (very important)
  • Role of Cognition: Not important
  • Speed: Slower (due to body changes)
  • Example: “I am afraid because my heart beats fast”

2.Cannon–Bard Theory

  • Main Idea: Emotion & arousal occur together
  • Order of Events: Stimulus → Arousal + Emotion
  • Role of Body: Important but independent
  • Role of Cognition: Not necessary
  • Speed: Fast
  • Example: Fear & heart rate occur together

3. Schachter–Singer Theory

  • Main Idea: Emotion = arousal + cognitive label
  • Order of Events: Stimulus → Arousal → Label → Emotion
  • Role of Body: Important (with cognition)
  • Role of Cognition: Essential (labeling)
  • Speed: Moderate
  • Example: Heart beats + “danger” → fear

4. Cognitive Mediational Theory

  • Main Idea: Emotion depends on appraisal
  • Order of Events: Stimulus → Appraisal → Emotion → Arousal
  • Role of Body: Secondary
  • Role of Cognition: Primary (comes first)
  • Speed: Depends on thinking
  • Example: Thinking “danger” → fear

5. Facial Feedback Theory

  • Main Idea: Facial expression influences emotion
  • Order of Events: Facial expression → Emotion
  • Role of Body: Important (via face)
  • Role of Cognition: Minimal
  • Speed: Fast
  • Example: Smiling → feeling happy
