Coping Mechanism

A coping mechanism is a conscious or unconscious response used by an individual to handle stress, anxiety, or internal and external conflicts effectively.

Types of Coping Mechanisms -

1. Problem-Focused Coping

  • Directly tackles the source of stress.
  • Example: Making a plan, seeking information, or changing behavior to solve a problem.

2. Emotion-Focused Coping

  • Manages emotional reactions rather than the stressor itself.
  • Example: Meditation, journaling, talking to a friend, or reframing thoughts.

3. Avoidance Coping

  • Evades or denies the stressor.
  • Example: Ignoring financial problems, procrastination, or distraction through entertainment.

4. Adaptive Coping

  • Healthy strategies that promote resilience and long-term well-being.
  • Example: Exercise, mindfulness, positive self-talk, seeking social support.

5. Maladaptive Coping

  • Harmful strategies that may worsen stress over time.
  • Example: Substance abuse, aggression, overeating, social withdrawal.

6. Cognitive Coping

  • Using mental strategies to reinterpret or reframe the situation.
  • Example: Positive thinking, acceptance, or finding meaning in adversity.

7. Behavioral Coping

  • Taking physical or practical actions to reduce stress.
  • Example: Time management, relaxation techniques, or engaging in hobbies.
