The process of creativity is often described as unfolding in distinct stages. These stages show how ideas move from vague beginnings to polished outcomes.
Stages of the Creative Process -
1. Preparation
- Gathering information, exploring the problem and immersing yourself in the subject.
- Example: A scientist reviews existing research before designing an experiment.
2. Incubation
- Stepping back and allowing the subconscious mind to work.
- Example: An artist takes a break and ideas quietly develop in the background.
3. Illumination (Insight)
- The “aha!” moment when a new idea or solution suddenly emerges.
- Example: A writer suddenly sees the perfect ending to a story.
4. Verification (Evaluation)
- Testing, refining, and validating the idea to see if it works in practice.
- Example: An engineer prototypes a design to check its feasibility.
5. Implementation
- Putting the idea into action and sharing it with others.
- Example: A musician records and performs a new composition.
