Reflexes Seen In The New Born

Newborn babies show several primitive reflexes that are automatic and essential for survival and early development. These reflexes are present at birth and gradually disappear as the brain matures.

Reflexes seen in the newborn -

1. Rooting Reflex

  • Baby turns head toward touch on the cheek
  • Helps in finding the nipple for feeding

2. Sucking Reflex

  • Automatic sucking when something touches the roof of the mouth
  • Essential for feeding

3. Swallowing Reflex

  • Enables the baby to swallow milk safely

4. Moro Reflex

  • Sudden spreading of arms and legs in response to loud noise or loss of support
  • Followed by bringing limbs back inward

5. Grasp Reflex

  • Baby tightly grasps an object placed in the palm

6. Babinski Reflex

  • Toes fan out when the sole of the foot is stroked

7. Stepping Reflex

  • Baby makes stepping movements when held upright

8. Tonic Neck Reflex

  • When the head is turned, one arm stretches out while the other bends

9. Blink Reflex

  • Eyes close automatically in response to bright light or sudden movement

10. Cough Reflex

  • Helps clear the airway
