Types Of Stress

Stress can be classified into several types based on duration, impact and source.

By Duration -

1. Acute Stress

  • Short-term response to immediate challenges.
  • Example: Feeling nervous before an exam or job interview.

2. Chronic Stress

  • Long-term, persistent stress due to ongoing problems.
  • Example: Living in poverty, enduring a toxic relationship, or constant work pressure.

By Impact -

1. Eustress (Positive Stress)

  • Motivates and enhances performance.
  • Example: Training for a competition, preparing for a presentation.

2. Distress (Negative Stress)

  • Overwhelms and harms health.
  • Example: Anxiety from job insecurity, grief after loss.

By Source -

1. Physical Stress

  • Caused by illness, injury, or environmental factors (heat, noise, pollution).

2. Psychological Stress

  • Arises from thoughts, emotions, and mental strain (fear, guilt, worry).

3. Social Stress

  • Linked to relationships, societal expectations, financial struggles, or discrimination.
