Difference Between Behaviour And Functioning
Behaviour and functioning are two distinct but related aspects of mental and physiological activity. Behaviour is what we can directly observe, while functioning refers to internal processes that often require instruments to measure.
Behaviour vs Functioning -
1. Behaviour
- Definition: Externally observable actions, movements, speech, and expressions.
- Visibility: Directly visible to others (e.g., crying, laughing, walking).
- Nature: Outward manifestation of emotions and thoughts.
- Examples: Restlessness, aggression, cooperation, speech.
- Measurement: Observed through human senses and social interaction.
- Role in Psychology/Homeopathy: Provides rubrics such as ‘Mind – Weeping’, ‘Mind – Violence’.
2. Functioning
- Definition: Internal physiological or psychological processes expressed by systems.
- Visibility: Not directly visible; requires instruments to detect (e.g., EEG for brain waves).
- Nature: Internal activity of systems like nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine.
- Examples: Heart rate, brain activity, hormonal secretion, muscle contraction.
- Measurement: Measured using special instruments (EEG, ECG, EMG, spirometer, blood assays).
- Role in Psychology/Homeopathy: Supports understanding of hidden processes influencing behaviour and emotions.
